Kenya is one of the world’s largest exporters of black tea, producing over 400,000 metric tonnes every year. Its reputation rests on the land itself.
Most Kenyan tea grows high in the mountains on both sides of the Great Rift Valley, where rich volcanic soils, equatorial sunshine and reliable rainfall create ideal growing conditions. Kenya is also the home of purple tea, a Kenyan innovation naturally rich in anthocyanins.

EAST OF THE RIFT | MOUNT KENYA
On the southern slopes of Mount Kenya, Kirinyaga’s smallholder farms grow tea in rich volcanic soil fed by mountain streams. Cool mornings and steady rainfall produce leaf with a lively character.

Set between the Aberdare Range and Mount Kenya, Nyeri is known for well-tended smallholder gardens and carefully run factories that produce some of Kenya’s most sought-after teas.

On the eastern slopes of Mount Kenya, Meru’s high-altitude gardens benefit from cool temperatures and fertile volcanic soils that encourage slow, even leaf growth.
WEST OF THE RIFT
Kericho is the heart of Kenyan tea, with rolling estates and smallholder farms stretching across the highlands west of the Rift Valley. Frequent afternoon showers keep the tea growing through much of the year.

The Nandi Hills rise above the Rift Valley, where lush tea gardens flourish in fertile red soils and generous rainfall.
